IOSH Membership – How to get it
Don’t presume membership is guaranteed
There appears to be a common misconception that students, having completed the IOSH Managing Safely or Working Safely courses, would automatically get membership to IOSH.
Unfortunately, this is not the case. Having an IOSH qualification does not mean membership to IOSH is granted upon completion. This is the same for NEBOSH qualifications. It may be disappointing to learn, but No qualification permits automatic membership to IOSH.
You can apply to IOSH for membership at any time, without having any qualifications. You would enter in at Affiliate level, which is the most basic entry level membership.
In total, there are currently 6 membership categories available:
- Affiliate Member (entry level membership).
- Associate Member.
- Technical Member.
- Graduate Member.
- Chartered Member.
- Chartered Fellow (the highest form of IOSH membership).
The level you would be entered at (or moved up to, if you are already a member) depends on your qualifications and experience. As you move up the membership ladder this is a great indicator of your competency and skills. Employers and indeed other industry professionals immediately recognise those who have progressed to Chartered Member / Fellow memberships, being at the top of the scale.
When you submit your application form, CV and membership fee, your information will be assessed by the membership team to determine what your level of membership you warrant.
