Professional Memberships
A Simple Breakdown
Finding the right qualification to support your planned career progression and effectively meet professional goals can take some consideration.
As such, it can be even more tricky obtaining specific professional memberships while maintaining a path which addresses all other development criteria. To help streamline this journey, we’ve prepared a simple breakdown with a diagram showing availability by qualification (pictured below) and brief explanations for each membership.
Before referring to this quick guide though, please bear a few things in mind:
- SHEilds DO NOT mediate memberships. All applications are subject to acceptance by the institutes in question, while some levels of memberships require at least some practical experience in addition to the qualifications.
- Progression from CertIOSH to CMIOSH is managed through an internal IPD scheme with IOSH.
- Memberships typically include an associated cost which is paid directly to the applicable institute and is not included in your course fees.
As shown above we’ve broken down memberships according to levels and specific subjects. Want to find out more about each? Check out our explanations below.

SHEilds Ltd
I need membership.
Hello Amir, to achieve membership you must first have completed one of the qualifications stated in this blog post.
I will provide the best advice in order for you to attain professional membership if you can first tell me which of these qualifications mentioned from NEBOSH or IOSH you have?
If you do not yet have one of these qualifications we can advise on where to start.
hi i just wrote environmental diploma am i capable to apply for membership ,and please explain to me the benefits of being a membership.
Hello Selma,
Once you have confirmed as having passed the Ed1 and Ed2; holders of the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management may use the designatory letters ‘EnvDipNEBOSH’ after their name.
The NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management is accepted as meeting the qualification requirements for non-chartered Member (MCIWEM) of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM – http://www.ciwem.org), for holders achieving the overall qualification from 1 February 2009 onwards.
Progression to chartered membership (MCIWEM C.WEM) is a further opportunity.
It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM – http://www.iirsm.org) as meeting the academic requirements for Specialist membership (SIIRSM).
Kind regards
Hi
I got my NEBOSH IGC since 2011. Please tell me how to become a member of the following bodies if i have qualified. I have been working as a safety professional since 2007.
AIOSH: Associate Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
TechIOSH: Technical Membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
AIIRSM: Associate Membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management.
Kind regards.
Piyam.
Hello Piyam
Thank you for your comment.
If you have the IGC certificate then you can apply to IOSH for membership at TechIOSH level. Associate level is a lower membership level so would not be applicable if you can go straight in at Tech level.
To apply for membership you need to go to the IOSH membership section of their website and complete the online application form, send in your CV and pay the membership fee. IOSH will then review your documents and decide which level you should be started at.
Please find below the link to the IOSH membership website: https://www.iosh.co.uk/Membership/Become-a-member.aspx
For AIIRSM membership you need to complete their online application form and send them your CV and certificate of the highest qualification you have and pay the membership fees.
Please find below the link to the IIRSM membership website: https://www.iirsm.org/individual-membership
If you’d like to progress you can always take your career further with Diploma level qualifications, such as the NEBOSH International Diploma. Once complete you can apply for higher memberships.
Kind regards
Thank you for this blog post – it is really helpful in establishing what I would need to gain in order to become a member at what level.
