Entry Requirements
No formal entry requirements exist to enrol on to this NEBOSH Fire Safety Course.
Recommended by NEBOSH, to enrol on this course students should have an appropriate understanding of the English language (International English Language Testing System 6.0 or higher) in order to explain the concepts within the course syllabus.
Questions within NEBOSH examinations are all phrased in English. Your answers are also required to be provided in English.
Study Syllabus
The qualification is divided into two units, unit FSC1: covers Fire Safety; and unit FSC2: covers how to perform a fire risk assessment.
There are 6 study elements in total, Unit FSC1 and FSC2 includes elements 1-6.

Course Assessment
One Online Open Book Written Exam + One Practical Assessment
NEBOSH exams are now attempted entirely online, and students are no longer required to physically attend an exam centre.
To achieve the NEBOSH Fire Certificate qualification, learners must pass both FSC1 and FSC2 exam/assessment.
- There are 6 elements to study, followed by one online written exam – FSC1.
- Students must also electronically submit one practical fire risk assessment – Unit FSC2.
How the course is graded
To achieve the Certificate in Fire Safety qualification, learners must pass the Open book examination for unit FSC1 with a minimum of 45 marks and a pass mark for the practical assessment FSC2.
FSC1 is the open book examination and unit FSC2 is a practical assessment.
The qualification grade is based solely on the FSC1 results, however a pass in FSC2 must also be achieved.
The FSC1 grading boundaries are as follows:
- 0 – 44 marks: Refer
- 45 – 64 marks: Pass
- 65 – 74 marks: Credit
- 75 marks and above: Distinction
The FSC2 assessment is a pass or fail exercise, to pass you must prove understanding as per the guidance document.

Important note: Students do not have to pay for NEBOSH exams initially. Exam fees are payable when booking your chosen exam date(s) and are subject to change inline with NEBOSH.
NEBOSH Exam / Assignment sitting locations
The written paper in this exam is now an OBE (Open Book Examination), completed Online via the Internet. This means you can sit this at home as opposed to attending a venue.

Steps to Pass
There are 4 steps to passing the NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate qualification.
- Enrol on the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety training course with SHEilds.
- Study the elements of the course online.
- Register for and sit the FSC1 exam paper, remotely via Internet connection.
- Register for and sit the FSC2 practical assessment, submitted remotely via Internet connection.
Once the FSC1 online open book exam & FSC2 assessment project are submitted, you’ll receive your final grade.
You will receive your results electronically (email), directly from NEBOSH on the results declaration date – information can be found on your booking confirmation slip.
Career Progression
As the NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate is a specialist qualification, should you wish to continue within this industry, a logical progression would be to find a more advanced qualification in this area. However, to continue down the route of occupational health and safety, a NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Diploma is advised.
Once certified with a NEBOSH Fire Certificate qualification we recommend studying a Diploma level training course. NEBOSH Diplomas are available, and NVQ Diplomas for those who prefer a more on-the-job approach to training.
