Dale Robinson Graduation 23rd June 2014
Dale Robinson NEBOSH Graduation
My NEBOSH Graduation in Summary
This week I had the extreme pride & pleasure of receiving both my Occupational H&S Diploma and Specialist Environmental Management Diploma from NEBOSH, at the graduation ceremony held at the University of Warwick. Sat amongst approximately 250-300 other Diplomates I was one of 3 people to receive recognition for both, within the same year.
The day was glorious in terms of weather and heightened the mood amongst all people present. There was a real sense of achievement and grandeur with professional photographers and excellent facilities and catering provided for. I couldn’t help but feel the hard work over the recent years of personal development had paid off and was being celebrated appropriately, with my family present to watch me receive the honours.
Where it started
I started accruing H&S responsibilities whilst working for blue chip companies before moving into petro-chem work at trade level – I was a scaffolder at the time of writing my first risk assessment. My line manager recognised an aptitude and suggested I take part in initiatives run by the H&S team, so I did. The H&S Manager confirmed this aptitude and suggested formal training so when the job finished on completion, I put myself through the IOSH managing safely course.
The result were very good and the tutor further suggested I “have a knack for H&S” and should consider further formal qualification with such as the NEBOSH general or construction certificate, with a view to starting the Diploma if I had similar success at certificate level. Due application and study saw that I did receive good grades in the NGC (3 pts off a distinction!!) and so the Diploma followed, and the Environmental Diploma thereafter.
There is no doubt that Diploma level qualification demonstrates a sound level of understanding and technical competence to compliment or enable a route for developing experience practically, within H&S management. Together with the International Diploma, these globally respected and recognised qualification are not just a platform, but a Launchpad for any budding EHS professionals
The future..
I’m aiming to develop further with a view to creating a course of CPD and following that set by IOSH to attain Chartered membership, something I would recommend for all aspiring H&S professionals. I will be aiming to complete the Bsc degree in EHS Management also and from there who knows. I have many people and organisations for helping to shape my career including SHEilds, and would highly recommend a learning path with them through the extensive selection of courses provided.
Good luck on your career and I hope you enjoy your graduation as much as I did
